“Leadership is sacred ground,” Doug Conant, former CEO of Campbell Soup Company, reiterated throughout the second module of The Higher Ambition Leadership Institute. The charter class of the Institute gathered in Boston for the second module of the intensive yearlong executive development program last week to discuss intentional leadership and personal leadership strategies.
Conant was joined by a faculty team that includes Mette Norgaard, co-author of TouchPoints, Professor Michael Beer, from the Harvard Business School, and Russ Eisenstat, the Executive Director of CHL.
The Institute builds a cross-company peer leadership community that engages participants in strengthening and applying their unique leadership model in their business units and in support of their company’s overall higher ambition aspirations. The program provides a distinctive opportunity for participants to intensely interact, engage and learn from other higher ambition leaders. The Institute is modeled on a highly successful program that Doug Conant developed as CEO of Campbell Soup.
This year’s participants included 23 senior leaders from Becton Dickinson, Conway, Henry Schein, Herman Miller and United Stationers. Each of the participants was designated by their respective CEO.
The program officially launched in January at The Center’s annual CEO Conference and continues with four additional modules throughout the year. The week’s module, titled “Find Your Leadership Voice”, focused on challenging the participants to become more intentional in their leadership and to begin crafting a personal leadership plan for the coming year(s). This work is essential for a leader, according to Conant, because as a leader “you are treading on sacred ground” affecting the lives and livelihoods of those you lead.
Over the course of the module participants had an opportunity to reflect on why they choose to lead, as well as to become more deeply rooted in their principles and values. Building on this work, and 360 feedback, participants began to craft a plan to develop their leadership capabilities and enhance their leadership impact.
The next module of the program, “Raise Your Sights”, took place on June 16-19, 2014. Check back for more updates on the Leadership Institute and other CHL initiatives.
